Summer Plant Care Tidbits

It is nearing the end of our beloved summer time, yet it's not time to be lackadaisical when it comes to the care of our plants and gardens. Listed below are some tidbits to help ensure a successful rest of the year in your gardening efforts!!

  1. Water, Water, Water. No water equals dead plants!! Make sure during the days that we do not get rain to water your plants regularly. The best time is the early morning so they have a strong reserve throughout the dog days of summer. If you cannot water in the morning, do it in the evening!! Also remember that your container plants will need special attention. Their water will fluctuate a lot quicker especially on those bright hot summer days.
  2. Continue to Mulch. The positive effects of mulch are too numerous to mention here, but the most important for this time of year is the ability to protect the plant by retaining the moisture for the roots!! We care a large variety of mulches that you can find under our products section.
  3. Fertilize your soil. Are your leaves turning yellow? Are you unsatisfied with your plant growth this year? Without properly maintaining a high level of nutrients in the soil you deprive your plants of the essentials they need. Try our mushroom soil as a great additive that all plants will love!! We also carry a variety of Plant foods.
  4. Stop Pruning. Spring blooming shrubs, vines, and trees such as Azalea, Redbud, Spirea, Forsythia, Wisteria, and some roses shouldn't be heavily pruned unless they are dormant. Excessive pruning from midsummer into fall will reduce next year's blooms. However, trimming a gangly shoot here and there to maintain the proper shape is perfectly fine.
  5. Keep weeding. I know you don’t like to do it, but it is a must. These little rascals rob your beloved plants of nutrients and water.
  6. Ensure that your plants are receiving the proper amount of light. Although most plants can adapt to almost any light level, this is an important distinction between surviving and thriving.
